Gio 'refreshed' that Mets will have low expectations in 2024: 'This is a renovation'

Now that the Mets missed on Yoshinobu Yamamoto and likely won't be making any big splashes this winter, Gio oddly finds himself feeling a sense of relief.

"This might sound nuts, but I'm refreshed that the Mets expectations are going to be low this year," Gio said. "We have had such high expectations for the teams around here, and they've failed on such an epic level, that I'm refreshed to go into a season where no one will expect them to do anything."

Now, Gio is ready for the Mets to continue their rebuild to hopefully produce a more sustained winner and avoid massive high-priced disappointments like last season.

"This is a renovation. Steve Cohen and David Stearns are the Property Brothers right now," Gio said. "They're going in and knocking down walls and getting their hands dirty, and ultimately, they will have the nicest house on the block…that's the hope.

"Right now, they found some asbestos and they gotta call somebody in to get rid of it, and it looks kind of ugly, and we're gonna have to deal with it."
