Many fanbases have plenty of optimism heading into Wednesday with pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training, while others look at their team's rosters with concern that there isn't enough there to make the upcoming season a memorable one.
For Gio and his Mets, the concern lies with the offense, where Carlos Correa was once expected to fill that gaping void in the middle of the order.
"I wanted him in that lineup," Gio said. "I felt World Series when Correa was in that lineup. Now I feel like they're there with the Phillies and the Braves, but are they better than them?
"Correa made them better than them. I'm not blaming them for backing out of the deal. The physical and everything else, they made a calculated and smart move, but I still feel like there's a bat missing. I really do believe, especially the way we saw the offense struggle down the stretch last season, that there's a bat missing."
The Mets offense certainly let them down in the Wild Card Series against the Padres, and while Gio acknowledged Boomer's assertion that the team will certainly be ready to make a move at the deadline if there is a clear need, Gio wants to see someone already on the roster, particularly one of their hyped prospects, make a big contribution this season.
"Steve Cohen is not gonna stop anywhere, but one of these guys really needs to step up," Gio said. "Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez, I don't know what you're expecting from a guy like Daniel Vogelbach…but one of thee guys need to step up, one of these younger guys. you really need that. You look at some of these great teams, the Astros, the Braves, they bring up these young guys and they become a staple in the organization. The Mets haven't had many of those."
