Daniel Vogelbach has been given a breather by the Mets, told to sit out and focus on getting back on track amid a dreadful season capped off by a recent 3-for-33 slide.
So, Vogelbach is on the roster, but hasn't played since June 7. With that in mind, Gio can't figure out who in the organization is still so enamored with Vogelbach that he is still being given a chance to turn things around.
"I'd love to know who the person is that is really defending Daniel Vogelbach," Gio said. "There has to be one person in that organization. Is it Billy Eppler, is it Steve Cohen, or is it Buck Showalter?
"There has to be someone who really loves him."
According to reports, Vogelbach's spot on the Mets isn't in jeopardy, and they are committed to seeing things through with the lefty DH who got off to a fast start after arriving last summer, but has faltered ever since. Gio says that kind of commitment doesn't happen without someone prominent in the organization still fully supporting him.
"I know they don't feel like they have a lefty that can just jump in and take his spot, but you gotta be able to do better than him, and they haven't," Gio said. "They're trying to squeeze everything out of him, so much so that they're having him not play to try and come back and play better. I don't think I've ever seen that."
