J.D. Davis appeared to have avoided serious injury after he was hit on the hand by a pitch during Tuesday night’s Mets win over the Phillies, but the third baseman went for further testing, and the results came back clean.
Initial X-rays revealed no damage to Davis’ hand, and he was diagnosed with a hand contusion. But the team, still wary of a potential hairline fracture, had Davis undergo further X-rays to make sure he didn’t suffer a hairline fracture when he was plunked by a 90 mph pitch that forced him to leave the game.
Manager Luis Rojas told reporters before Wednesday's game that those X-rays would take place later Wednesday afternoon, and it was later revealed that the additional X-rays showed no damage as well.
“He’s a little swelled up, his availability is questionable right now, if we could name it," Rojas said.
The X-rays are a precaution after the initial results came back clean, but Davis will likely be unavailable for Wednesday’s game against the Phillies.
“They want[ed] to make sure everything is clean and there are no small lines missing or anything like that,” Rojas said.
As for two of the team’s injured pitchers, Carlos Carrasco and Seth Lugo are still proceeding on schedule, and even though Carrasco hasn’t pitched since his simulated game this past weekend, he will be back on the bump soon as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring strain.
“He’s going to get into a five-day rhythm now where he is going to get a side and then get back up and start building,” Rojas said.
Lugo hasn’t begun throwing off a mound yet, but he remains on schedule after resuming throwing earlier this week in his process back from surgery to remove a bone spur in his pitching elbow.
“Lugo is paying catch,” Rojas said. “He hasn’t gotten on the slope yet, but he’s progressing distance wise, but nothing more than that in the last couple days.”
Jeff McNeil was a noteworthy absence from Wednesday’s starting lineup, but Rojas said the infielder is healthy, and just wanted to get Jonathan Villar his first start of the season.
“Everything is well with McNeil,” Rojas said. “Just fiving a chance for Jonathan Villar to get a start and play some second for us. But everything good with McNeil. He’ll be good to go off the bench. We’re just trying to get everyone involved to start.”
