Jacob deGrom becomes second-fastest pitcher to 1,500 strikeouts

Jacob deGrom didn't get the win on Wednesday, but the Mets did, and deGrom still got his seemingly regular piece of history in his latest outing.

The Mets ace allowed just two runs over seven innings while striking out 10, the most notable coming in the fourth inning on a 100 mph heater to Willy Adames, marking the 1,500th strikeout of deGrom's career.

The punchout, the second of three in that inning, made deGrom the second-fastest pitcher to reach that milestone in MLB history, behind only Yu Darvish, who did it in one fewer start.

"I actually didn't know that I was that close to 1,500 until I think Lindor said 'Throw the ball,' then I looked up and was like 'Oh, wow,'" deGrom said. "It was very special."

DeGrom received a standing ovation after the historic strikeout, and got right back to business by striking out Omar Narvaez on three pitches, as the righty continues to cruise through a historically dominant season.

"Playing in front of fans has been a blast," deGrom said. "They've always treated me very well. That ovation that I got, I didn't really know what to do at that moment. I just wanted to get back to pitching, I don't know what to do. But very cool and a very special moment."
