It has been exactly one year and a month since Jacob deGrom last took the mound at Citi Field for the Mets and that streak finally ended on Sunday.
The Mets right-hander, making just his second start of the season, was back for his Citi Field debut this year as he toed the rubber while Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" blared through the speakers.
As if that moment was not enough to send chills down the backs of Mets fans, deGrom retired the side in the first inning, pumping 102 mph gas and striking out All-Stars Matt Olson and Austin Riley.
DeGrom, who has been sidelined with a "stress reaction" in his right shoulder since spring training, made his debut last week against the Washington Nationals, tossing five innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out six.
If deGrom manages to stay healthy and can pitch like he has in the past, the Mets would be going into postseason with the best one-two punch in the rotation with deGrom and Max Scherzer.
