Joe Benigno was filling in for Brandon Tierney on Thursday, and it was good timing, as the Mets had just completed their biggest win of the season the night before.
The win was punctuated by a walk-off three-run home run by Pete Alonso, who Joe says the Mets need to hurry up and sign him to a long-term contract.
"I wouldn't be waiting too much longer if I'm Steve Cohen to get number 20 in a long-term deal," Joe said. "It's time now."
The homegrown Alonso has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining, which the Mets can buy out if they agree to a long-term deal. Joe says it needs to happen now, as Alonso is already approaching a historic standing within the franchise.
"He's gonna wind up being the greatest position player they ever had there," Joe said. "You could talk about [Mike] Piazza, you talk about Darryl [Strawberry], you could talk about David Wright, whoever you want. He's gonna be the greatest position player in the history of the franchise.
"They got to get it done with Pete. I don't want to see this guy play anywhere but with the Mets."
