Max Scherzer was still dealing with neck spasms on Thursday, and Joe Benigno is ready to declare that the righty's Hall of Fame career is over.
"Max is done as far as I'm concerned," Joe said. "He's 39 years old. We saw it last year, he started to break down. He was terrible in the big games against Atlanta and San Diego."
Scherzer's Mets tenure has taken a steep dive since the end of last season, when he was rocked by the Braves with the division on the line before being bombed by the Padres in the Wild Card Series. Now, after serving a 10-game suspension, he told reporters he was "fighting like hell" to avoid the IL before the neck spasms hit.
"And is he ever pitching again?" Joe said. "What's the deal? When is he pitching again?"
Evan told Joe it was expected that Scherzer would be ready to pitch this weekend, but Joe isn't buying it.
"Don't hold your breath," Joe said.
