Joe B: Steve Cohen sold Mets fans 'a bill of goods'

Joe Benigno was not a happy camper filling in for Boomer on Wednesday, after his Mets held a fire sale at the trade deadline, including ace Justin Verlander.

With the Verlander trade, Joe, feels like he, and the rest of the Mets fanbase, has been duped by Steve Cohen, who, according to Max Scherzer, will use 2024 as a transitional year before aiming to compete in 2025, or more likely 2026.

"That's it. They are punting on next year," Joe said. "How do you sell the Mets fans, you got all the money in the world, and you're not, at the very least, gonna offer the most amount of money to Shohei Ohtani? This is so typical Mets. This is why they never win.

"The rotation next year, right now, is Senga, Quintana, what is after that? Megill?"

Joe is blaming the bleak outlook for 2024 on Cohen, who he is convinced is no longer going to pursue Ohtani this winter.

"What we're getting is hosed. Let's be honest," Joe said. "If you're a Met fan, you're getting hosed. They're hosing you. This guy came in with all this money…he goes out and spends all this money on the team, and now, after one bad year, he punts on the team. And you're not gonna go after Ohtani? How do you do that?

"This owner sold us a bill of goods…we all went delirious, we don't have the Wilpons anymore, this guy's gonna spend more money than everybody, and two years into it, this guy is dumping everybody."
