Thursday afternoon was not the type of start that Justin Verlander was hoping for in his Mets debut.
Pitching in his first game back from a teres major strain that had sidelined him since the start of the season, Verlander took the mound at his old home part in Detroit, and promptly surrendered back-to-back home runs to Riley Greene and Javy Baez to put New York behind 2-0 in the first inning.
Greene mashed a curveball out into the seats in right field, while Baez, against his former team, hit his second home run in as many days by blasting an opposite field laser into right field.
Verlander, who had gotten a nice hand from the crowd, had built himself an immediate hole, with the Mets looking to avoid a third straight loss to a Tigers team that entered the series as one of the worst offensive teams in baseball.
