According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Mets are operating with a "loose budget" of $10 million for the rest of the offseason, meaning another reliever or two may be the only moves left this winter.
Keith understands the strategy of signing players to short-term deals to try and keep the team competitive while building up the farm system, but he doesn't get the point of putting a cap on offseason spending.
"What are you gonna get, a couple relievers? Wandy Peralta and another guy?" Keith said. "You have the richest owner in sports!
"Why are you putting a cap on your spending in the winter on Jan. 9?"
Justin Turner, Jorge Soler, and J.D. Martinez are likely off the board now if Martino's report is accurate, but Keith says there is a silver lining, as it keeps roster spots open for top prospects if they prove themselves big-league ready come summer.
"As a Met fan, you might not be happy on Opening Day," Keith said. "But you might be happy in the summer when Luisangel Acuna or Jett Williams starts to emerge, or Drew Gilbert is tearing it up in Triple-A, and Buck Showalter isn't here to say 'Nah, I don't want these young kids.'"
