So, yeah, we know Sal Licata is not a fan of the Mets' hiring of Carlos Mendoza for a few reasons, but on the bright side, he doesn't think that will affect the Mets' free agency plans, which are "all about the money," and if "the Mets get Yamamoto and Ohtani, no one will care who the manager is."
That said, he doesn't believe you can say they've upgraded at skipper.
"It doesn't mean that they can't win, and maybe, two years from now, we're all like, 'hey Carlos, I'm sorry, you're the greatest manager ever, first guy to win a World Series since Davey Johnson!' Maybe that's the case," Sal said. "However, they could have made be a better hire that would have eventually had the same result. This is an uninspiring Yankee bench coach off an 82-win season replacing a borderline all-time great, Hall of Fame manager in Buck Showalter."
BT asked if it would be different if Mendoza came from elsewhere, and he admitted that's likely, but harkened back to his thoughts on one of Buck's competitors two years ago (who eventually ended up as an MLB skipper).
"One of the guys that it was between with Buck when Buck was about to get the job was Matt Quatraro, and I said the same thing about him as I'll say about Mendoza: who the hell is Matt Quatraro?" Sal said. "I don't care where he's coming from with the Rays; like, it's Buck versus Quatraro, this is not even a debate! Hire Buck."
They did that, and "Merry Buckmas," but yeah, same principle could've applied here.
"Even with all the other names that you could have said, first-time guy, Beltran, DeRosa, whoever it is…Carlos Mendoza, dude?" Sal asked, before giving the rant of all rants and going back on some previous words:
"You're right, I was wrong, so I'll say it: Now the Mets are gonna take over this town! No more LOLMets, the Yankees are going the wrong way, I apologize," Sal said before screaming: "I should have known better because I am an idiot and I never learn my lesson! Since I said that, Eppler's out for ridiculous reasons, and they move on from Buck and they bring in the Yankee bench coach. I give up! Mercy! If it's not Yamamoto and Ohtani, I quit being a fan. I can't take it. Kill me! You've done it a million times! Kill me! I'm dead!"
All BT could say in response?
"Hey, it always gets darkest before the dawn."
