Marcus Stroman played catch on the field on Friday afternoon, and while the Mets still plan to proceed with caution, the righty is currently on track to make his next start after battling hip soreness in his last outing.
"He expects to make his start next time, but we still want to check out his progression from the hip," manager Luis Rojas said Friday. "Wednesday he still had soreness there still, yesterday he had the day off, I think things progressed, but still wanted to see him today and see how he feels."
Stroman left his start on June 22 in the second inning, and tried to stretch out his hip before leaving the game. MRI results came back clean, a major sigh of relief for a pitching staff that is already down Joey Lucchesi, Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco.
Rojas said Stroman's next start could come on Sunday against the Phillies, though Jared Eickhoff is currently listed as the probable starter. Stroman's scheduled to start on Monday against the Nationals, but that could change if he progresses well over the next two days.
"His expectations are to throw, but we just have to evaluate," Rojas said.
Stroman is in the midst of a career year, pitching to a 2.32 ERA in 85.1 innings so far this season.
