The Mets could be banking on Brett Baty, the team’s second-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, to be the team’s long-term solution at third base after Carlos Correa went to the Twins on a six-year deal.
With hope resting on Baty, New York has reportedly steered away from potential trades that would have sent the 23-year-old to a division rival.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Marlins “tried a couple times” to swing a trade for Baty, offering in return one of their many promising young starting pitchers, in this case Edward Cabrera or Jesus Luzardo, per Heyman’s report.

Baty, the Mets’ 12th overall pick in 2019, made his big-league debut last season and homered in his very first game, while recording a hit in each of his first three games. He saw a total of 42 plate appearances over 11 games, but New York hopes he could become their first long-term solution at the hot corner since David Wright.
Cabrera, 24, pitched to a 3.01 ERA in 71.2 innings of work for Miami last season, striking out 9.4 batters per nine innings. Luzardo, 25, posted a 3.32 ERA in 100.1 innings last season, his best season as a big leaguer since making his debut with the A’s in 2019.
