Max Scherzer will not pitch Sunday for Mets, will throw 'somewhere' early next week

Max Scherzer will not pitch Sunday for the Mets in Miami, but don't count out his next start still being in the Majors.

Mets manager Buck Showalter announced before Friday's series opener against the Marlins that Scherzer will not be activated for the series finale, instead throwing "somewhere" on Monday or Tuesday.

Scherzer threw 65 pitches in a rehab start at Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday, and was hopeful that if his strained oblique felt okay, he could return to the Majors. Instead, Scherzer remains in limbo, with a Monday throw day meaning a simulated game of some sort, as the entirety of Minor League Baseball takes Mondays off.

Tuesday could be a possibility, with both Triple-A Syracuse and Low-A St. Lucie home, or even the opener of the Mets' two-game set with Houston – Showalter didn't say yes, but didn't rule it out – but given the Mets' schedule, one more rehab start might not be too strenuous an ask.

The Amazins had Thursday off, then have off-days next Monday and Thursday around a two-game set with the Astros, so they can line up their rotation as needed. Taijuan Walker, Chris Bassitt, and TBA are scheduled to start this three-game set in Miami, but both Trevor Williams and David Peterson would be on turn to start Sunday's game.

The Mets could allow Scherzer to rehab Tuesday and then return to MLB next Sunday, needing only four starters (with multiple options for those outings) next week ahead of Sunday's homestand finale against Texas.
