The Mets missed out on their big fish in Carlos Correa, but they are reportedly still looking in on improving around the margins, particularly when it comes to their bullpen.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, New York is among the teams showing interest in former Yankee reliever Zack Britton, who has missed significant time in recent years due to injury. Britton, 35, was infamously left in the bullpen in the 2016 American League Wild Card Game after an all-time season, by none other than Mets manager Buck Showalter.
Britton has appeared in just 45 games over the past three seasons due to multiple injuries, including Tommy John surgery. He tossed just 0.2 innings of work in 2022, and hasn’t logged a full season since 2019, when he posted a 1.91 ERA across 61.1 innings for the Yanks.
Across his 12-year career, Britton holds a strong 3.13 ERA over 641 innings, and his heavy sinker induces plenty of ground balls.
Per Heyman, Britton also has a close relationship with new Mets coach Dom Chiti, who was a bullpen coach in Baltimore while Britton was in his prime with the O’s.
