The Mets continue their series against the Angels on Saturday, but they won't be facing Noah Syndergaard as initially planned.
Interim manager Phil Nevin instead decided to give the former Met two extra days of rest instead of pitching in the series finale on Sunday. It could be a decision based purely on rest for a pitcher who didn't throw many innings last season due to recovery from Tommy John surgery, but Craig and Evan think it's especially weak to avoid a former team which Syndergaard had been trolling earlier in the season.
"Noah, Mr. Tough Guy. If your manager Phil Nevin comes up to you and says…'we want to give you extra rest,' if you're a real tough guy, what you would say to Phil is 'totally respect that and I agree with you, but not now,'" Evan said during Friday's show. "You opened up your mouth, and I know a lot of it is a joke…if you're Noah Syndergaard and you're still tweeting at Mets fans. You tell Phil Nevin, unless you're hurt, which I don't think he is, 'give me rest another time.'
"This is completely on Noah Syndergaard. You know he comes across as 'a barf.'"
Syndergaard seemed to be trolling the Mets when he congratulated teammate Reid Detmers for his "real" no-hitter earlier in the season, and he is typically very active on social media, which has turned him into a villain among Mets fans, and now that he won't be pitching against a much-improved Mets lineup, Craig and Evan think Syndergaard is ducking his former team.
"As a competitor, you want the smoke," Craig said. "You want the bragging rights. And you have to think, I'm sure Noah does, that he's good enough to beat the Mets. But by having essentially his daddy protect him from pitching against the Mets, he loses all male credibility. He really does."
