Billy Eppler expressed confidence in the Mets’ chances of retaining Jacob deGrom this winter, but his optimism didn’t stop with the team’s biggest free agent.
Eppler, speaking at the GM meetings, also believes Brandon Nimmo and the Mets will have “strong communication” in terms of keeping the center fielder in Queens.
“Brandon, just like Jake, knows how we feel about him,” Eppler said. “But he’s reached a point in his contract where he’s been afforded the opportunity to kind of look around. But I think there will be strong communication there as well.”
Eppler also added that the team will be talking with Taijuan Walker, who recently opted out of his deal to become a free agent. Walker posted a 3.98 ERA in two seasons with New York, earning an All-Star nod in 2021.
“I believe he enjoyed his time here and we will be talking to him too,” Eppler said.
Eppler also added that the Mets picked up the option on Daniel Vogelbach, acquired at the trade deadline and used as a platoon player against righties.
