After the Mets released a somewhat cloudy update on Jacob deGrom, stating that the ace's scapula showed "continued healing," and general manager Billy Eppler didn't shed much more light on deGrom's continued recovery when speaking with reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
"We're pleased with what we saw yesterday," Eppler said. "I was happy to get that news…it was good. He's gonna get to move back further and throw harder. Those are good things."
While Eppler is pleased with the results, and it will clear deGrom to increase his distance and velocity as he continues to throw, there is no timetable for the righty to graduate to throwing on a mound.
"The step after this throwing progression would be mound, but there's no defined time on that right now," Eppler said. "Right now, it's just a matter of letting him step back further and throw harder, and treating the patient more than anything else. How does he feel? How does the scapula feel under a little more stress, which will come with that distance and velocity?"
Eppler also left the door open for more MRI imaging for deGrom, and said Monday's MRI "looked pretty clean." So it doesn't seem like deGrom has fully healed yet, making a June return more uncertain.
"I'll rely on the doctors," Eppler said. "They haven't told me anything specific on it, but if they want to take another look, they'll take another look."
