Keith: Mets blame game starts at top with Steve Cohen, Billy Eppler

If Mets fans are playing the blame game for the team's disappointing season so far, Keith McPherson says it should start at the top.

And that includes owner Steve Cohen, who has shown a willingness to financially commit to his roster unlike any owner in baseball, but hasn't spent the money very wisely up to this point.

"He is the one who recruited Max Scherzer here and paid him all that money," Keith said. "And he hasn't been worth half of that."

But, the bulk of the blame should go to Billy Eppler, who has made several trades and signings that are not working out up to this point, or have already failed.

"Billy Eppler made some promises, and he didn't come through," Keith said. "Last year, he was supposed to make this bullpen better. He kind of shrugged it off and said there was a surplus of relievers, like he knew he was gonna get some guys. Where are they? That bullpen is thin.

"You get the DH in the last couple of years, how do you not have a guy? You go and sign a pitcher from Japan who needs seven days of rest and has to get used to the game, you gotta know there's an adjustment period, and you're relying on him to be your No. 3? I don't know who was thinking about that."

New York's 101-win season feels like a long time ago, and suddenly, the championship window that Cohen set for himself is nearing an end.

"I know the love affair with Steve Cohen and that honeymoon period is definitely over," Keith said. "This is a guy who said he was looking to win a World Series in five years. Just say less. Don't say that."
