The Mets lead in the NL East has shrunk to three games as New York nurses its first three-game losing skid of the season, and Boomer and Gio say the team is now battling to fight off a disastrous outcome: the Braves overtaking the division lead by the All-Star break.
The Mets' fast start to the season helped build a cozy lead in the division, but now, the defending champs have stormed back, and await in less than two weeks for a three-game set in Atlanta, shortly before the break. Before that, the Mets face the Marlins, the lowly Reds, and the sub-.500 Rangers, giving New York a chance to cushion their lead and ensure that they will be in first during the break.
"They gotta get the month of July off to a good start," Boomer said during Thursday's show. "Sixty wins at the break is something that's attainable."
For the Mets to reach 60 wins, they would have to win 13 of the next 17 games, not an easy task even with some softer opponents on the horizon, including the putrid Cubs just before the break. Going 13-4 would almost certainly mean the Mets would still be in first at the break, but if they're not, it would be nearly impossible for Mets fans to fight off the "here we go again" feeling.
"At that point," Gio said. "Then we are sitting in Mets negativity land and there's nothing we can do about it.
The Mets have a big boost coming back in Max Scherzer, but have also since lost Tylor Megill for an extended period of time, while Carlos Carrasco continues to struggle. Facing their first three-game losing streak, Boomer says it's time for the Mets to collect themselves and gear up for a crucial stretch heading into the break.
"This is a crossroads moment for the Mets this season," Boomer said. "If you come to the break and you're behind the Braves?
"That would be terrible."
