The Mets, armed with Steve Cohen’s wallet and a 101-win team that he wants to build on, likely won’t be out of the running of any free agent this winter.

Even Michael Conforto.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, New York is considering a reunion with Conforto as one of “many” outfielders the team is considering as a potential fit in the outfield, coming a year after Conforto chose free agency after spending his entire career in Queens.

Per Sammon, Conforto could fit in if Brandon Nimmo doesn’t return, leading to Starling Marte shifting over to center field, and Conforto returning as another corner outfielder.

Conforto, the Mets’ 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, had a down year in 2021, battling injuries and posting a .729 OPS, his lowest since 2016, in 125 games, one year after finishing the shortened 2020 season with a .927 OPS. After rejecting the Mets’ qualifying offer, Conforto injured his shoulder during a workout for potential interested teams, and missed the entire 2022 campaign.

Now, Conforto is back in free agency, and it could lead him right back to where he was before becoming a free agent.
