The Mets have completed their roster cuts, and in a somewhat surprise move, have designated Robinson Cano for assignment.
Pitcher Yoan Lopez was optioned to Triple-A, bringing the roster down from 28 to the necessary 26 players.
Many expected Dominic Smith might be a victim to the roster cuts, given his two minor league options remaining, but Cano has struggled badly out of the gates this season, and was suspended all of last season due to another PED violation.
Cano is still owed $37 million through next season due to his contract that he signed with the Mariners.
