Francisco Lindor had just walked back into his hotel room when he accidentally slammed his finger in a door, ruling him out for Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.
It didn't sound like a pleasant accident when the red-hot shortstop described the incident to reporters before the game.
"After I finished my massage I went to my room, and I have double doors, and I went to close one, I didn't think both would close, and they closed at the same time, so now I have a swollen finger," Lindor explained.
"I ran around the room for three minutes. I didn't want to look at it. I felt like I had my heart in that finger."
Lindor didn't sugarcoat the fact that the middle finger, on his right hand, looked fairly gruesome after the accident, but he was still hopeful that he would be back in the lineup as soon as Friday.
The Mets could certainly use him, as he was batting nearly .325 over the last three weeks, and without him, New York was shut out for the first time all season.
"It's bad. But it's just swollen and there's blood in it," Lindor said. "Hopefully I can have a better sensation than right now. Right now, I don't have much sensation on the ball. Hopefully tomorrow it feels a little better."
