Jacob deGrom is back, and it is an opportunity for Brandon Tierney to remind everyone that there has been no pitcher in New York with a greater peak than the Mets ace.
"There is nobody that can tell me that on deGrom's best day, Seaver was better," BT said. "Not hearing it. same with Gooden, same with Guidry, same with Cone, Clemens, CC, Moose, Pettitte, same with all of them. Every New York pitcher that I've seen in my lifetime is looking up to deGrom.
"I challenge anybody…to refute the statement that when deGrom is right, so and so was better in New York. I will wait for the names, because there is none."
It sounds like a bold statement, but given the fact that the two-time Cy Young winner was putting up Bob Gibson-type numbers before injuries got in the way last season, it's hard to argue against peak deGrom as the best the Empire State has seen.
To add to the hype of deGrom's return, BT also said that the righty making his return after not pitching for a year, while his retooled team is in the throes of a pennant race, makes this one of the top New York sports stories in recent memory.
"I think most Mets fans know this," BT said. "To me, when you're taking one of the greatest New York pitchers of all time…after a return of a year, and now suddenly dropped into the middle of a pennant race, this No. 1 is what it's all about. From a sports point of view, there's nothing better.
"Jeter chasing 3,000 [hits], Jeter's final game, the Carmelo trade, Bernard King coming back for the final games of the 1986 season…deGrom being back in a Mets uniform with what the Mets are chasing, this is as big as it gets. This is awesome."
