If Jacob deGrom can’t lead the Mets to a win on Saturday night, attention will quickly turn toward the two-time Cy Young winner’s future in New York.

Expected to opt out and become a free agent, deGrom would become arguably the most coveted pitcher on the market this winter, though he would come with health questions given his lack of availability over the past two seasons.

It’s unclear how the Mets will toe that line when it comes to deGrom’s recent health history and his otherworldly talent, but according to SNY’s Andy Martino, deGrom has a friend in the clubhouse who is campaigning for New York to keep deGrom in Queens long term.

Per Martino, rotation mate Max Scherzer “has expressed to management” that he wants the Mets to keep deGrom, while deGrom has reportedly warmed up to the idea of remaining with the Mets after spending a season with Scherzer and manager Buck Showalter.

Will that be enough to keep deGrom around? That answer will come in the winter, but if it isn’t, the Mets could turn their attention towards Justin Verlander or Shohei Ohtani, according to Martino. For now, deGrom and the Mets are focused on delaying those questions at least another night with a win on Saturday.
