Jacob deGrom reacts to 'emotional' Citi Field return

Jacob deGrom's Citi Field debut could not have gone much better.

The Mets ace allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings of work, striking out 12 against just one walk en route to shutting down a potent Braves offense to help New York take four of five from the defending champs to open up a 6.5 game lead in the NL East.

It was a reintroduction to the home crowd fitting for the best pitcher on the planet.

"Stepping out there was a little bit emotional," deGrom said of his Citi Field return. "Big ovation, kind of took a second to take it all in and tried to focus and take care of business."

DeGrom received a loud ovation when he took the mound at Citi Field for the first time in over a year when the game started, and received another when his day ended. His feelings for each one were much different after his day ended by allowing a two-run blast to Dansby Swanson, but he appreciated the warm reception nonetheless.

"That was nice, but I was very frustrated," deGrom laughed. "Walking the nine hitter and leaving a pitch over the plate and letting Dansby get it. It was very nice, but in that moment I was pretty heated."
