Jacob deGrom could begin rehab assignment Sunday: Reports

Max Scherzer says he has made his final rehab start and his next time on a mound will be in his return to the Mets, and as one rehab assignment ends for a key rotation arm, another may be set to begin.

According to multiple repots, Jacob deGrom could begin a rehab assignment with St. Lucie, the Mets' Single-A affiliate, this coming Sunday. DeGrom threw a 27-pitch live BP session in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday morning, and Mets manager Buck Showalter told reporters afterward that if deGrom came out fine the next day (Thursday), then they could discuss the next step in his recovery.

DeGrom hasn't pitched yet this season due to a stress reaction in his right scapula, so he will likely need several rehab starts before he is ready to return. Still, if he does begin an assignment on Sunday, he could return to the team shortly after the All-Star break, which would be a massive boost for a team that has seen their division lead cut to three games while Tylor Megill landed on the 60-day IL, and Carlos Carrasco has struggled badly of late.

Given how long he has been out, deGrom would likely need roughly four rehab starts.
