Jacob deGrom threw 27 pitches in a live batting practice session on Wednesday morning in Port St. Lucie, and while Buck Showalter is remaining tight-lipped on whether a rehab assignment will be next, he did say that the ace came out of the session strong.
“If he feels well tomorrow, we'll be able to talk about that next step,” Showalter said before Wednesday’s game against the Astros. “He hasn’t had anything that’s taken him off schedule so far.”
DeGrom hasn’t pitched yet this season as he recovers from a stress reaction in his right scapula, and he didn’t pitch the second half of last season, as multiple injuries derailed what was a historic season to start. Now, New York could use its best pitcher while Max Scherzer also recovers from injury, Carlos Carrasco continues to struggle, and Tylor Megill heads to the 60-day IL.
DeGrom will need multiple rehab starts once he begins an assignment, considering he hasn’t pitched since spring training.
