Jacob deGrom is set to take the mound for the Mets on Thursday night, after he was previously scheduled to face the Yankees on Tuesday. Taijuan Walker's back spasms could have played a role in deGrom missing that Subway Series start, but Gio is still worried about the New York ace.
"Even Keith Hernandez said it when he was on with us. He looked uncomfortable in his last start, and they pushed him back a couple days," Gio said. "Did they push him back just because they want to make sure he's healthy and they believe the extra rest is really gonna help him, or was he not feeling 100 percent and they weren't telling us about it?
"That is still in my head. I don't know what we're gonna get from him tonight. I really hope he goes out there, seven innings, three hits, no runs…and then you have nothing to worry about."
DeGrom certainly had his shakiest outing of the small sample size season last time out, allowing five hits and three runs in 6.2 innings, but swill while striking out nine with no walks. It wasn't deGrom at his best, but it was still a quality start that put the Mets in a spot to win the game.
But Gio will exhale once deGrom walks off the mound Thursday after a return to dominance with all signs pointing to a healthy ace.
"I have to see it," Gio said. "If anybody is just assuming Jacob deGrom is going to be great and healthy the rest of the way, you're not paying attention."
