The Mets, seemingly losing in every way imaginable over the past week, made unfortunate franchise history after yet another blown lead on Thursday night.
After David Robertson served up a game-tying home run to Orlando Arcia in the bottom of the ninth and Tommy Hunter surrendered a three-run walk-off blast to Ozzie Albies an inning later, New York had officially lost three straight games in which they owned a three-run lead or more in all three games, something that had never been done before in the history of the organization.
The Mets jumped out to early leads in the first two games against the Braves, but the bullpen faltered on Tuesday and Max Scherzer ran out of gas after a dominant start on Wednesday. In Thursday's series finale, Justin Verlander never had his best stuff, but the Mets offense pounced on Spencer Strider, only to watch the pitching staff give it all back, and then some.
Add it all up, and it amounts to a sweep at the hands of Atlanta, another nightmare at Truist Park, a six-game losing streak, and an 8.5 game deficit in the NL East.
