With Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, and Tylor Megill all sidelined with injuries, Boomer had one name immediately come to mind that should be brought on for reinforcement.

That name is Bartolo Colon, and yes, he was being serious.

“He was the first guy I thought of yesterday,” Boomer said during Friday’s show. “I’m being serious.

“Here’s what I need: if he is pitching in the Mexican League, meaning that his arm is good, all I need is about five starts of four innings each. That’s all I need.”

Colon was indeed pitching for the Acereros de Monclova, and hasn’t pitched in the big leagues in nearly four years, but the 48-year-old has a cult following of fans who love his agelessness, his refusal to stop pitching, and for moments like his home run in a Mets uniform in 2016.

Boomer is a part of that cult following, no matter how much Gio can’t believe he is actually serious about wanting the Mets to give Colon a call.

“I would love to see him back,” Boomer said. “He’s got experience, and now that we have a DH here, he doesn’t have to hit, but I would love to see that again.”
