Staten Island FerryHawks pitching coach Nelson Figueroa is winding back the clock to 2009.
The former Mets pitcher, now on the coaching staff of the new Atlantic League team, was called on to pitch in game one of an unexpected doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon against Gastonia, bringing the 48-year-old from the bench to the mound in a sudden shift from coach to player.
But at 48, it looks like Figueroa's still got it, as he picked up two strikeouts within the first three batters of the first inning.
Figueroa pitched for nine years in the majors, including two with the Mets in 2008 and 2009. His last big-league season came in 2011. More than a decade later, he's on the mound in a professional baseball game.
Oh, and he was also in the lineup batting ninth in the order.
