Nick Plummer, a former 23rd round pick in 2015 who began the season still hoping to make his big-league debut, was called up by the Mets on Saturday while Brandon Nimmo battled a sore wrist.
Two games, five hits and two home runs later, Plummer is now a folk hero in New York.
A minor league free agent signing in the offseason, Plummer made a grand entrance to his big league career and his Mets tenure by blasting a game-tying home run against the Phillies in the ninth inning for his first career hit, then went deep again a day later to highlight a three-hit day in a blowout win over the Nationals.
It was the first time in Mets history that a player went deep in each of his first two big league games.
"It's been a whole bunch of fun, just coming out here playing in front of the fans at Citi Field, the Mets fans, it's been awesome," Plummer said after Monday's win. "And coming up with two wins in the past two days, can't ask for much more.
"All the credit to the guys in the clubhouse. They've really backed me. Ultimately, we're a bunch of grown men having fun, playing the game we've loved since we were four, five, six years old."
We'll see how long the Plummer hype lasts, but for now, he is the latest landmark of what has been a feel-good season for the Mets so far.
"There's a lot of really good pieces," Plummer said. "That's what intrigued me when I came over in free agency. A lot of really good personnel in here, and then You mix in what the Cohens and what Billy [Eppler] is doing, ultimately we've got a lot of good dudes…it's gonna be a really fun group to watch."
