Drew in Point Pleasant thought he was doing a solid for his friend, who had work the next morning, by leaving Citizens Bank Park in the bottom of the eight of Thursday night’s Mets-Phillies game.
Instead, he was depriving himself of one of the most improbable comebacks that his favorite team has ever pulled off.
Drew left Philadelphia and headed home for Monmouth County, New Jersey and likely hit the New Jersey Turnpike right as Francisco Lindor blasted a two-run home run to right center, cutting the Phillies lead to 7-3. A comeback at that time still seemed improbable at best, but the “Make it Happen Mets,” as Keith McPherson likes to call them, completed the miracle and plated seven runs in the ninth to win it 8-7, leaving Drew to call into Keith’s show on Thursday night to confess.
“I got home like two minutes ago,” Drew said. “I’m sitting in my backyard right now watching the top of the ninth on DVR. I cant believe they came back! We left in the bottom of the eighth. Unreal.”
Drew wanted to be a good friend, but also, like many others, never would have thought the Mets would pull off a comeback like they did.
“They were dead in the water,” Drew said. “They lost 9-2 the night before, it seemed like they were going into a little of a swoon, so I didn’t feel bad about leaving.”
He sure feels bad about leaving now.
