Mets Notes: Noah Syndergaard to pitch again Sunday, Tomas Nido to be activated from IL

Noah Syndergaard pitched one inning for High-A Brooklyn in his first rehab appearance on Thursday night, and he will pitch again for the Cyclones on Sunday.

Syndergaard, who allowed a home run to the first batter he faced in an otherwise solid inning of work, will throw one-plus innings on Sunday. Once again, he will feature just his fastball and his changeup, as he has eliminated his slider and curveball from his arsenal for the rest of the season in an effort to limit the strain on his surgically repaired elbow.

Synergaard hasn't pitched since 2019 and is making his way back from Tommy John surgery. If he makes it back before the end of the season, he will likely contribute in a bullpen role.

The Mets are getting some catching depth back before their weekend series with the Nationals, as Tomas Nido is expected to be activated from the IL prior to Friday's series opener.

Nido went down with a thumb sprain on Aug. 15 and has been taking batting practice and throwing throughout this week, and his return will be a boost behind the plate, as starting catcher James McCann went down with an injury just days after Nido's.

McCann has also begun taking batting practice but isn't quite ready to make his return. Patrick Mazeika had been handling the bulk of the catching duties in McCann and Nido's absence.

Nido has played in 51 games so far this season, and is slashing .231/.275/.343 with three home runs.
