The Mets reportedly were nearing a deal with the Padres shortly before the 2022 season began, one that would have brought Chris Paddack, Eric Hosmer, reliever Emilio Pagan, and $30 million to New York in exchange for Dominic Smith.
That deal eventually fell through, and now we may know why.
According to Jon Heyman, the Mets called off the deal after raising a red flag with Paddack’s medicals, deciding if the righty was going to miss more than a season due to injury, the trade wasn’t worth the risk. So it never happened, Smith remains with the Mets, and Paddack was traded along with Pagan to the Twins. Just last week, it was announced that Paddack would undergo Tommy John surgery after leaving his last start with elbow inflammation. He had a 4.03 ERA with two walks and 20 strikeouts in 22.1 innings before the injury.
Meanwhile, Hosmer has been thriving at the plate for San Diego, batting .336 with an .880 OPS, though according to reports, the Mets would have tried to find a third team in the hypothetical trade as a way to unload Hosmer and his eight-year, $144 million deal that runs through 2025.
