After claiming yet another series by splitting Sunday’s doubleheader against the Phillies, the Mets became the first team in the league to reach the 20-win mark this season.
“Let’s go Mets, hell yeah!” Pete Alonso said when he heard the news.
Alonso smacked a pair of home runs on Sunday, helping New York reach those 20 victories, continuing the team’s red-hot start that has them comfortably in first place through the first month of the season, though there is still a long way to go for the team to claim its first division title in seven years.
“That’s great, but we want to win the division,” Alonso said of the 20-win mark. “That’s the ultimate goal.”
The Mets would be in great position to reach that goal if they stay the current course, which has seen contributions from all over the roster, from combined no-hitters to resurgent bats like Jeff McNeil.
“We’ve had a great start,” Alonso said. “We’ve run the bases well, we’ve hit well, our pitching staff, starters or bullpen, we’ve played such great team baseball. Everyone’s answered the bell.
“Everyone’s doing an incredible job. I feel like we’re working incredibly well. It’s been so fun playing with these guys.”
