After blowing a ninth inning lead just hours after it was announced that Max Scherzer would miss up to two months with an oblique injury, the Mets went back to what they can control: winning with who they have.
Luckily, they still have the league's RBI leader.
Down by one in the bottom of the 10th, Pete Alonso blasted a no-doubt, walk-off home run to left off Giovanny Gallegos to give New York a 7-6 win and put a bright spot on an otherwise deflating day in Mets land, having now lost both aces from their previously revamped rotation.
"It's absolutely electric," Alonso said. "Especially a moment like this."
With deGrom already out and Scherzer now down, joining deGrom's replacement Tylor Megill on the IL, many have begun to wonder if the Mets will begin to lose their grip on the NL East. But Thursday's win showed the offense has what it takes to pick up the slack and continue the team's hot streak to start the season.
"We're just a bunch of tough, gritty guys," Alonso said. "We're extremely resilient and we do whatever it takes every single day."
Alonso's home run raised his season OPS to .866,continuing to provide the Mets with some much-needed power in the middle of the lineup. But now, as the pitching depth continues to be tested, Francisco Lindor has reached base in seven straight games after a two-hit day, and Alonso had three hits of his own to pace an offense that will need to continue to trend upwards while the pitching staff mends.
"I'm just really happy that everyone is contributing," Alonso said. "Everyone is putting together quality at-bats and giving me opportunities to drive them in. It's a team effort, and it's really exciting to be playing this well at the beginning of the year, but we've got one goal in mind."
