There is baseball action down in Port St. Lucie, as Mets minor league camp opened on Friday, and with it arrived top prospect Francisco Alvarez.
Now back on a diamond, Alvarez wants to make another arrival later this season, at Citi Field.
"Make it to the bigs, that's the goal this year," Alvarez said through his interpreter.
The 20-year-old catcher is one of the most hyped prospects in New York's minor league system, and ranked first overall by MLB Pipeline (Baseball America has him 13th overall in the majors). He reached High-A Brooklyn last season and smacked 22 home runs while batting .247 in 84 games, so a jump to the majors would be quite a leap in the span of one year, but Alvarez hopes to be even better in 2022 with even more power.
"I've been working on my body, so weight room a lot, and working on my defense," Alvarez said. "In general, just everything, because I like to compete."
The 20-year-old's projected arrival to the majors, per MLB.com, is 2023, but Alvarez is motivated to arrive ahead of schedule, and if James McCann underwhelms again this season, he could force his way into the conversation.
