The severely depleted Mets are pulling out all the stops when it comes to fielding a lineup.
With injuries to Pete Alonso, Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, Kevin Pillar, Albert Almora Jr., J.D. Davis and others, New York is forced to plug holes regardless of experience, and that will be on display on Monday night against the Rockies when James McCann gets the start at first base.
McCann, brought over on a four-year deal this past offseason to be the Mets starting catcher, has never played first base at the major league level in his eight-year career. In fact, this will be McCann's first game playing any position in the field other than catcher.
McCann hasn't played an inning at first base in any pro ball capacity, having never played the position in the minor leagues either. Dating back to 2010, McCann has only played catcher, save for one brief appearance at third base in one game in Triple-A during the 2014 season.
In addition to being in a completely new position, McCann has also struggled badly at the plate this season, slashing .200/.270/.238 with one home run in 105 at-bats. He is batting third for New York on Monday night.
