Opening Day for the Mets saw a bizarre ruling at the expense of Jeff McNeil, when the reigning batting champion was charged with a strike after umpires ruled that teammate Pete Alonso took too long to get back to first base after McNeil fouled off a pitch.
But manager Buck Showalter told reporters before Friday’s loss in Miami that the league had reached out and informed him that the ruling was a mistake, and in fact should have been nothing more than a warning.
“Won’t happen again,” Showalter said.
The ruling fortunately didn’t factor into the outcome of the game, as New York won its season opener over the Marlins, and the Mets now have some clarity on the issue that had many scratching their heads afterward.
