Mets reportedly agree to deal with reliever Trevor May

The Mets have reportedly made their first signing under new owner Steve Cohen.

The team reached an agreement with former Twins pitcher Trevor May, according to multiple reports.

The contract is for two years and was pending the results of a physical, the New York Post reported.

May, a right-hander, has emerged as a top setup man in the Twins' bullpen in recent years. He posted a tidy 3.19 ERA with 153 strikeouts in 113 innings over the past three seasons, for an ascendant Minnesota franchise that enjoyed a dream season in 2019.

The relative breakout finally came for May after an early career that was marked by underwhelming performances in the starting rotation, a transition to the bullpen, and a lost season to a torn UCL in 2017.

The 31-year-old was moved to relief work for good in 2016, after breaking into the big leagues as a starter with the Twins in 2014.

But May looked reborn upon his return in 2018, suddenly a key role player on a stacked team. His stuff has played up in shorter stints out of the bullpen, where his strikeout rates per 9 innings skyrocketed into the double-digits.

With the Mets, May will presumably slot into a high-leverage role in the back end of a bullpen that ranked 18th in MLB with a 4.60 ERA in 2020.

May, a 6-foot-5 native of Washington, was originally drafted by the Phillies out of high school back in 2008, and was dealt to the Twins in the 2012 deal that sent Ben Revere to Philadelphia.
