Mets to place Jacob deGrom on IL, but MRI reveals no serious injury

The Mets received some good news on Jacob deGrom Monday morning.

The team announced on Monday that an MRI found no structural damage, although deGrom would be placed on IL and miss his next start due to the right side tightness he experienced on Sunday.

MLB Network's Jon Morosi first reported an MRI did not reveal any serious or long-term injury after the right-hander exited the game after two warmup pitches in the sixth inning.

It is possible deGrom may miss a start — which could equate to a short-term IL stint — but the expectation is that the Mets ace will not miss any significant time.

The news is certainly a sigh of relief for the Mets after deGrom, who was already scratched from a start early last week with inflammation in his right lat before he was pulled after two warmup pitches in the sixth on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

The Mets said they pulled deGrom for precautionary reasons and manager Luis Rojas said after the game that this new issue appeared to be separate from the lat injury that caused him to miss his previous start.

DeGrom tossed four perfect innings on Sunday before running into trouble in the fifth, uncharacteristically walking three batters and allowing a run.

It is imperative for the Mets that they have deGrom healthy and at full strength the rest of the season as the team entered Monday in first place in the NL East.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner has been dominant in six starts this season, owning an MLB-leading 0.68 ERA and 0.60 WHIP along with 65 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.
