The Mets took a stranglehold of the NL East by winning four of five games against the Braves this past weekend, making it known who is in charge of the division by silencing the defending champs through the final three games of the series to open up a 6.5-game lead.
If there was any question whether New York could hold off the Braves after Atlanta retooled at the trade deadline, those were put to bed at Citi Field this weekend.
"It's huge for us," Pete Alonso said. "That was a long fay yesterday and these guys came in and put up runs early…just shows a lot. This team grinds through everything. That was a long day yesterday, and to come out today and jump on them early and finish the series was huge."
The Mets flexed all of their firepower this weekend, using their Max Scherzer/Jacob deGrom combo to take the final two games of the series, while Edwin Diaz was his usual dominant self in relief. Francisco Lindor continued to ride his hot streak, while Pete Alonso joined the home run party with deadline acquisitions Tyler Naquin and Daniel Vogelbach.
It was as emphatic of a statement as the Mets could have made in declaring that the division belongs to them.
"Taking four out of five from the second-place team, it's really good for us," Alonso said. "There's still a lot of games to play down the stretch, but we did a really good job, that's a really high-quality opponent on the other side."
