Joe Benigno declared Max Scherzer as “done” last week, and now, he is claiming another Mets veteran who may simply have nothing left.
“I think Starling Marte is done,” Joe said. “He doesn’t hit the ball hard anymore, and he doesn’t make the plays in the outfield.”
Marte, who will turn 35 this year, still has two years left on his contract after this season, but after an All-Star campaign in 2022, he has looked like a shell of himself in 2023, posting a miserable OPS+ of 65 while batting .238 with just one home run. His defense has also fallen off, and whether it’s recent injuries or aging, Joe doesn’t think Marte is an answer anymore.
In fact, Joe says the Mets need to call up Ronny Mauricio and continue with the youth movement, and if he had to pick a casualty to make room for Mauricio, it would be Marte.
“Honestly, I think it’s Marte,” Joe said. “I think Marte is done.”
