Mets statement on Carlos Correa: 'We were unable to reach an agreement'

Just as the Twins were officially announcing the signing of Carlos Correa, the Mets released a statement of their own.

It was short and to the point, to say the least.

"We were unable to reach an agreement," the statement read. "We wish Carlos all the best."

New York thought it had an agreement with the star shortstop last month, but much like the Giants before them, the Mets raised concerns about Correa's right leg, which was surgically repaired way back in 2014. As a result, the agreement on a $315 million deal fell apart, even after owner Steve Cohen publicly commented on the agreement, and Correa returned to Minnesota on a six-year deal.

Correa's contract with the Twins is roughly $42 million more in guaranteed money than what New York ultimately offered in its adjusted contract following Correa's physical. Now, the Mets are left looking for another offensive upgrade after believing they had the crucial missing piece.
