Tylor Megill is officially on the comeback trail for the Mets, as he commenced a rehab assignment at Double-A Binghamton on Thursday and pitched one perfect inning with three strikeouts.
Megill threw 11 of his 19 pitches for strikes, getting his fastball up to 97 MPH and getting all three strikeouts swinging, two on his changeup per reports.
The Mets have revealed that the plan for Megill is to make five relief outings and then join the Mets’ bullpen sometime later this month.
Megill was 4-2 with a 5.01 ERA in nine MLB starts this year, but he missed four weeks in May and June with biceps inflammation, made one start in his return, and then went back on the IL with a shoulder strain on June 7.
Moving Megill to the bullpen allows the Mets to both gain another weapon in the late innings (or as needed for length in middle relief) as well as expedite the righty’s return, as there are now less than five weeks left in the regular season.
The Mets have a full rotation plus Carlos Carrasco expected to return this weekend, so using Megill in relief lengthens the staff now and in the postseason.
