Report: Mets interested in Justin Turner reunion

The Mets have already made a major upgrade in the infield by trading for superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor, but could they be looking to add another star on the left side?

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are "interested" in free agent third baseman Justin Turner, but the two sides are still "not matching up" on years and dollars of a potential contract. The Dodgers, where Turner has spent the past seven seasons and just won a World Series title, are still the likeliest landing spot for Turner, but New York appears to be in the running for yet another big-name free agent.

Under new owner Steve Cohen, the Mets have reportedly been in the mix for top free agents like J.T. Realmuto, George Springer and Trevor Bauer, but have struck out on all three. Signing Turner would end that streak and give the Mets arguably the strongest left side of the infield in all of baseball, but New York would likely have to part ways with current third baseman J.D. Davis via trade. According to Rosenthal, the Mets aren't sure what kind of return they could get for Davis, who has posted an .853 OPS over the past two seasons.

Signing Turner would represent a reunion with the Mets after New York non-tendered him in 2013, making him a free agent at 28 years old.

Turner then went to Los Angeles, where he became a star and has slashed .302/.382/.503 since joining the Dodgers. He turned 36 in November and was a force in the 2020 World Series, smashing two home runs and four doubles across 26 plate appearances to help LA clinch its first World Series win since 1988.
