Michael Conforto has reportedly declined the Mets' qualifying offer and will test free agency, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Conforto, coming off a rough 2021 campaign, will bank on his age and prior success as he and his agent Scott Boras will look to surpass New York's qualifying offer of $18.4 million.
Conforto, who will be 29 next season, batted just .232 with 14 home runs and a .729 OPS over 406 at-bats last season, finishing barely above league average with a 101 OPS+. Those are well below his career numbers, as he is batting .255 with an .824 OPS and a 124 OPS+ across seven seasons, all with New York.
Some wondered if Conforto would accept the qualifying offer and try to reset his value with a hopeful return to form in 2022, but he appears to be set to try out the open market.
Conforto was an All-Star in 2017 and was a monster in the shortened 2020 season, batting .322 with nine home runs and a .927 OPS in 54 games.
